A Royal Legacy: Exploring Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung)
Standing at the iconic intersection of Ubud’s main streets (15 min walk from our place), Ubud Palace—officially known as Puri Saren Agung—is more than just a landmark; it is the spiritual and cultural heart of the town. Built in the early 1800s during the reign of Tjokorda Putu Kandel, this historic residence offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the aristocratic heritage of Bali.

The Architecture of Artistry

The palace is a masterclass in traditional Balinese design, adhering to the philosophical concept of Tri Hita Karana (harmony between people, nature, and the divine).
  • Intricate Craftsmanship: As you walk through the public courtyards, you will see meticulously carved stone statues, grand gateways (Candi Bentar), and ornate wooden doors often coated in gold.
  • A Living Residence: While the royal family still resides in private quarters within the complex, visitors are welcome to explore the beautifully maintained outer gardens and ceremonial pavilions.
  • Artistic Hub: Historically, the palace was a patron of the arts, attracting Bali's finest painters and musicians and helping to establish Ubud as the island’s creative epicenter.

The Nightly Dance Performances

As evening falls, the palace courtyard transforms into one of Bali's most atmospheric stages. Each night at 7:30 PM, traditional dancers in vibrant, golden costumes bring ancient Hindu epics to life to the rhythmic sounds of a live gamelan orchestra.
  • A Rotating Schedule: You can see a different performance every night, including the graceful Legong Dance or the dramatic Barong & Keris.
  • Seating Tip: These shows are popular! We recommend arriving by 6:45 PM to secure a good seat in the open-air courtyard.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Entry Details: Access to the palace grounds during the day is free of charge. You must buy ticket to watch the evening show performance.
  • Opening Hours: The palace is open for sightseeing daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • Location & Proximity: Located directly opposite the Ubud Art Market, it is the perfect anchor for a day of exploring the town center.
  • Dress Code: Unlike a formal temple, a sarong is not strictly required for the outer courtyards, but modest dress is always appreciated out of respect for the royal family.
