Sacred Waters: A Guide to Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple
Located just a 30 minute drive from Saughina Ubud, Tirta Empul is one of Bali’s most significant and spiritually active temple complexes. Built around a bubbling holy spring, the temple's name literally translates to "holy water spring". For over a thousand years, Balinese Hindus have come to this sacred site for ritual purification, and today, it offers guests a profound window into the island’s living heritage.

The Melukat Purification Ritual

The heart of Tirta Empul is the long rectangular pool where the Melukat (purification) ritual takes place.
  • The Spring Source: The crystal-clear water originates from a central spring that bubbles up through fine black sand in an inner courtyard.
  • The Fountains: Water is channeled through 30 carved stone spouts into the main pools. Each spout has a specific spiritual meaning, used for cleansing everything from bad dreams to physical ailments.
  • A Respectful Experience: While visitors are welcome to participate in the ritual, it is a deeply religious act. We recommend observing with a quiet heart or joining in with the guidance of a local priest to ensure the ceremony is honored correctly.

Exploring the Temple Grounds

Beyond the famous pools, Tirta Empul is a beautiful example of traditional Balinese temple architecture.
  • Inner Courtyards: Wander through the ornate gateways into the Jaba Tengah and Jeroan (inner sanctum), where you can see locals in traditional dress offering intricate flower canang sari.
  • The Koi Pond: Near the exit, there is a large, serene pond filled with oversized koi fish, offering a peaceful spot for reflection.
  • The Presidential Palace: Perched on the hill overlooking the temple is the Istana Tampaksiring, a landmark palace built for Indonesia's first president, Sukarno.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Modest Dress: A sarong is mandatory to enter the temple grounds. If you plan to enter the water for the purification ritual, you must wear a specific green rental sarong provided at the site.
  • Arrival Time: Like Gunung Kawi, Tirta Empul is best visited early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) to experience the site’s true tranquility before the afternoon tour groups arrive.
  • A Spiritual Duo: Since it is located in Tampaksiring, Tirta Empul is conveniently situated right next to Gunung Kawi, making it easy to visit both in a single morning trip.
