The Valley of the Kings: A Guide to Gunung Kawi Temple

Feb 12, 2026For those seeking to step off the beaten path and into Bali’s ancient past, Gunung Kawi is an unmissable sanctuary. Known as the "Valley of the Balinese Kings," this 11th-century archaeological wonder is one of the island's oldest and most impressive temple complexes.
The Legend of the Carved Mountain
The name Gunung Kawi literally means "carved mountain," a fitting title for a site defined by ten monumental shrines (candi) cut directly into the sheer rock face. Standing seven meters tall, these awe-inspiring memorials are believed to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his royal family. Local legend even suggests the entire complex was carved in a single night by the supernatural fingernails of a giant named Kebo Iwa.
A Journey Through Time and Nature
Visiting Gunung Kawi is as much about the journey as it is the destination. To reach the temple, you’ll descend approximately 300 stone steps that wind through lush river valleys and vibrant terraced rice fields.
- The Shrines: You will find five shrines on the east bank of the Pakerisan River and four on the west, with a tenth "remote" shrine tucked further south.
- Meditation Caves: Explore the small stone caves adjacent to the shrines, where Buddhist monks once sat in quiet contemplation—a testament to Bali’s history of religious harmony.
- The Sacred River: The holy Pakerisan River flows through the center of the complex, creating a serene atmosphere of constant, purifying water.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Beat the Heat: Arrive early in the morning (around 8:00 AM) to avoid the midday sun and the larger crowds.
- What to Wear: As with all Balinese temples, modest dress is required (shoulders and knees covered). A sarong is usually included with your entrance fee.
- Stay Hydrated: The climb back up the 300 steps can be challenging in the humidity, so bring water and take your time.
- Combine Your Trip: Gunung Kawi is just a few minutes from the famous Tirta Empul water temple, making them a perfect pair for a half-day exploration from Saughina Ubud.
